Al Sharpton was born with the name Alfred Charles Sharpton, Jr. His day of birth was October 3, 1954, location in Brooklyn, New York. He was ordained in the Pentecostal Church at the tender age of ten. Al is considered an outspoken and controversial political activist especially in regards to injustice and racial prejudice. He says his activism started at a very young age. His parents separated when he was still a child, his mother did not have an income. This caused them to move to a poorer neighborhood. He witnessed the lack of amenities and this caused him to become a political activist.

Al Sharpton established the National Youth Movement in 1971.He was outraged about garbage collection services, collection that was not picked on time, if someone needed an ambulance it would take at least an hour and if they called the police, they did not come. He says that he had previously lived in a neighborhood that all these things happened on time; this is why he was so enraged.

Since his father was not around, a few men influenced his life. These included his church pastor, Bishop Washington, Rev. Jesse Jackson and singer James Brown.

Sharpton became involved in a number of highly publicized cases in the 80s. These were cases within the New York area that had an affect on the community of African Americans. He was involved in protests towards racial discrimination and injustices. Al Sharpton has made several attempts at political office. In 1992 and 1994, he tried to win a seat in the United State Senate but he was not successful. He then tried to be the mayor of New York in 1997.Al Sharpton aimed for a higher office when he wanted to become the Democratic Party nominee for office of the president. He was not able to garner enough votes to be able to win a nomination. It seems politics is not his arena.

This champion of rights seems to have problems of his own in the form of taxes. According to the Internal Revenue Service, Al Sharpton owes back taxes as far back as 2002.It seems tax issues are not new to him. His National Association Network is said to owe, $ 1.9million in payroll taxes and penalties as at 2006.His profit making organization is said to owe $175,962 as state taxes. Personally he owes $1.3million in local and federal taxes. In September 2010, the IRS again filed $ 538,652 tax lien against Al Sharpton for his 2009 taxes. He was granted an extension of time to October 15 so he could file his 2009 tax returns. Public records still indicate that Al Sharpton’s back taxes come to a total of $3.7million.
He however came to an agreement with the Internal Revenue Service and the State though and managed to pay back all his taxes. The IRS have yet to remove the tax liens attached to his property claiming that bureaucracy was delaying it.
