The importance of GPS systems for auditors that travel

As an external auditor that travels quite a bit, you will likely be faced with the challenge of getting assigned to new clients on a regular basis that you are not sure the location of.  Once more, these may be out of town and even if you can find your way there, you may be stuck in the hotel room once you arrive because you don’t know what is available for recreation or dining.  Since nobody wants to be stuck in this type of situation, the best solution for this is to buy a Global Positioning Device (GPS) for when you travel.  While some cell phones have these built in, I have found the that actual GPS units have a higher degree of functionality since they are specifically designed for this.  They give added information such as travel time, traffic, and are generally easier to place in plain view while driving.  Many cell phone services either charge or are sparse on features.

Here is a list of the top reasons to purchase a GPS system when auditing clients out of town:

*To find the client location
*To find restaurants in the area
*In case you get lost while out of town
*To get back to the hotel
*To find entertainment

The great thing about GPS systems nowadays is that they have become to cheap, it isn’t a burden to buy.  You can easily pick one up at your local retailer for around a hundred dollars, with no monthly service charges.  Don’t forget to check out other articles in our Guide for New Accountants.
