Jimmy Lee Thorpe or Jim Thorpe as he is known was born on February 1st, 1949 in Roxboro, North Carolina. He was the ninth of the children in his family and is the son of a fairway superintendent. Before becoming a professional golfer in 1972, he attended the Morgan State University. During his professional career as a golfer in the 1980s he won three major PGA or Professional Golfer Association tours. He later surpassed this score by winning the PGA tour for about ten times in his senior years as a Pro Golfer. Also included in his list of victory is one senior major championship that of the Tradition Championship that was held in 2002. During his career as a Professional Golfer he was rated as one of top ten champion trophy golfers who earned the largest amount of money.

Jimmy Lee Thorpe career as a professional golfer was marred by the event in which he was convicted of not paying his taxes. According to the charges that were filed by a Federal Court in Orlando, Florida, Jimmy Thorpe had failed to pay an approximate amount of $1.6 million in taxes during the years of 2002, 2003 and 2004. Jimmy Thorpe lawyer, Mark Horwitz initially stated when the trial began that Mr. Jimmy Lee was going to plead innocence to the charges put up against him. But in the year September 2009, Jim Thorpe pleaded guilty to his charges. According to his attorney, Mark Horwitz, Jimmy Thorpe had accepted the fact that he was guilty and was ready to face the punishment for it.

The Federal Court of Florida sentenced him to one year in prison on 22 January 2010. Also included in his punishment was that Jimmy Thorpe had to serve 200 hours of community service under supervision. The amount that he was fined for his crime of tax evasion varies people to people. Some say that he was fined a total of$4 million and some are in the opinion that he was charged with $5.4 million. But the fact remains that Jimmy Thorpe had to repay the fine that he was sentenced to during his 200 hours of community services.
After being held in confinement for one year, Jim Lee Thorpe was released from custody on January 17th, 2011. Due to the fact that he was jailed, he was suspended by the Professional Golfer Association until an allotted time. According to a press statement, PGA had stated that although the fact that Mr. Jim Thorpe was indicted of a serious crime, he has felt the remorse of his wrongdoing. Though being released from prison, Jimmy Lee Thorpe has yet to pay the amount of money for which he was charged with. Currently he is undergoing 200 hours of community service under strict supervision. Jimmy Thorpe is expected to resume his career as a professional golfer in the Champions Tour that is to be held later this year.
