It seems one cannot talk about O.J Simpson without his murder trial coming up. In fact most people do not know a lot about his life before the sensationalized murder trial of his ex wife and her lover. Before all this O.J. Simpson was a celebrated sportsman in the late sixties and seventies. He was the running back for the Southern California Trojans and Buffalo Bills. He is actually 6’1 and 212 pounds and succeeded in setting a number of records for his teams. Otherwise known as ‘Juice’ he was considered among the most prominent NFL running backs.
He was awarded a number of trophies while in college at USC for his athletic achievements. In his senior year, he was awarded the Heisman Trophy. During the draft of 1969, O.J. Simpson was placed first in the then American Football League in Buffalo Bills. Simpson set record from being the first NFL player ever to pass the 2,000 yard mark. Even though this record has since been broken, he was the first. The one record that still stands is achieving the 2,000 yard mark after only 14 games.
Simpson retired his 11 year career as a sportsman after two seasons with the 49ers.At this point Simpson tried to portray himself in positive light. When has was young Simpson had a troublesome youth, in fact he was held in a correctional facility. His charm made all the trouble go away though, as he was the first African American athlete to be sold as a brand.
O.J. Simpson murdered his ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1995.He was however acquitted of the charges, despite too much evidence against him. The trial was highly publicized; it was called the ‘Trial of the Century’. This problem came and went, then his tax problems surfaced.
In a case filed by the State of California in September 1999, it was claimed that Simpson owed the state $ 1.44million in delinquent back taxes. Delinquent taxes are any taxes that you fail to declare in any given year. United States tax department, IRS, requires American citizens to fill their tax forms on April 15 of each year. Failure to which, you could be committing a criminal offence. The penalty for this is one year in jail and a penalty of $ 10,000 for each year one failed to fill their tax return forms.
However O.J. Simpson’s tax violation was removed from tax delinquent list of California, this is because he is currently in jail. After he was acquitted for the murder of his ex wife and her friend, he was convicted of robbery and kidnapping in 2008.It was claimed that Simpson went to a Las Vegas Hotel room to get back his stolen memorabilia from dealers. He went into the hotel room with five other men to get back his game balls, photos and plaques.
The back taxes that Simpson owed to the State of California could not be paid back due to obvious reasons.
