R. Kelly was born Robert Sylvester Kelly on January 8, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. R. Kelly was raised in the housing projects on Chicago’s Southside. He was brought up by his mother together with his two brothers and sister. He came from humble beginnings in comparison to the life he now lives. Poverty, depression and daily struggles were not missing in his childhood. R. Kelly kept away from all the negative influences in his life by focusing on music and basketball. Kelly credits his teacher, Lena Mclin as the one person who pushed him into music.

Kelly started out by playing his keyboard on the streets. This is when Wayne Williams, a young music executive at the time spotted him. Williams got Kelly to sign a contract with his record label, Jive Records in 1990.Public Announcement, a group formed by R. Kelly was formed in 1991,the group released their first single ‘Born Into The 90s’ the same year.

As of 1993, R. Kelly was an independent musician. The release of his sophomore album ’12 Play’ heightened the success of his music career. The album included such hits as ‘Sex Me’, ’Bump and Grind’ and ‘Your Body’s Calling’. At the beginning of 1994, R.Kelly could even produce for other musicians like Aaliyah.
It later emerged that Kelly and Aaliyah had lived together in wedlock. The only problem was that Kelly was then 27 while Aaliyah was only 15.This marriage did not last long as they soon separated. Kelly later confessed that he had actually married her. Aaliyah died in a plane crash in August 2001.

Kelly released another single in 1996 for Michael Jordan’s movie ‘Space Jam’.’I believe I Can Fly’ was one of his most successful singles at the time. It went on to win the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song and was also nominated in Song of The Year and Record of The Year categories.

A persistent issue that has dogged Kelly’s career from as far back as 1991 is his sexual rapport with underage girls. The most prominent happened in 2002, when a video showed Kelly having intercourse with a 14 year old daughter of his associate. This did not stop his career though.

Kelly has had a number of brushes with the law. In regards to his tax issues, Kelly is one of the celebrities to appear on the list of Internal Revenue Service for unpaid tax. In January 2010, a tax lien of $837,442 in unpaid back taxes was filed in Cook County Recorder of Deeds. An earlier tax lien of $1, 036, 858, was lifted by the IRS after it was resolved in June 2011.This means he does not have to pay this amount. The lien that was filed in January 2010,is however still outstanding.

R. Kelly seems to be dogged by a number of financial issues all at the same time. His house is about to be foreclosed due to unpaid mortgages of at least one year. His former manager is also suing him for damages and attorney’s fees.
