Richard Hatch was born on 8 April 1981 in Newport Rhode Island, United States of America. Although being a licensed real estate agent, Richard had previously also worked as a cars salesman and as a bartender. He also served five years in the United States Army in which two of his years were spent in the United States Military Academy. Richard Hatch gained fame in the world when he won the first ever Survivor Series that was aired in the USA. He entered as a competitor and in the end won the grand prize of $1 million. Because of his huge win he was also often invited to radio stations to speak.

Richard Hatch found himself in deep trouble when he didn’t file in his taxes the money that he had won in the survivor series competition and also the money he had received from the different radio stations that he had spoken at. Because of this, he was charged on 7 accounts of fraud including that of money, mail and wire. He was found guilty on the behalf of the charges against him on 16 May 2006 and was sentenced to serve 51 months in prison. In his defense, Richard filed an appeal against the CBS network stating that the network assured him that his winning of the prize money in the survivor series will be notified to the Federal Court but it never happened. His appeal was shot down and the sentence against him was upheld.
After 51 months serving in jail, he was confined to his house as home imprisonment starting from 14 May 2009. During his home arrest he asked for a seven week leave from the Federal Court on the basis that he wanted to attend a survivor anniversary season that was to be held in the island of Samoa in the coming moth. His request was later denied by the Federal Court. He was later arrested again on violating his confinement by giving interviews to two newspapers which included the Access Hollywood and the other being WJAR. Giving interviews is considered as a violation by the Federal Court. He opposed his arrest stating that media were forbidden from access to prisoners in jail which he was not, so there should be no charges stacked against him. He also criticized the court that they were charging him on the basis of his homosexuality. His comments sparked anger from the Federal Court. He was released from prison on 16 October 2009.

On 15 December 2010, Richard Hatch was arrested again on the fact that he had still not filed his income for tax returns. This time he was sentenced to 9 months in prison and 26 months under supervision. He was ordered by the court, in which he was sentenced in to hand himself over to the United States Marshalls in one week or he will face serious consequences. After serving his time in jail, Richard Hatch was released from his sentence on 12 December 2011.
